While Susanna was a common subject among Baroque painters from Rubens to Tintoretto, the attention lavished on Susanna’s naked body usually suggests an audience less interested in the inner turmoil of the painting’s subject, and more interested in an illicit erotic frisson. “My name comes with a lot of history. It is a name that my great-great-grandfather lived with through boarding schools and genocide. It’s a statement that we’re still here.” The exhibit features 10 Halfmoon pieces in total, including a mix of small- and large-scale works. The stoneware sculptures were all made in Helena, Montana, where Halfmoon is currently doing a clay residency at the Archie Bray Foundation. Halfmoon’s large-scale works in the exhibit are a particular standout: Some of them weigh up to 450 pounds and stand almost six feet high. “I’ve always been drawn to large-scale artworks,” Halfmoon says. “It makes you feel small, and sometimes I think we need moments like that.” Some of the works were so large they even demanded a four-day firing in their kilns. “I max out every kiln I’m in,” she says. “I would like to make works a lot larger, though. Eventually, she decided that the benefits of including these legal documents outweighed the possibility they might eclipse the art itself. “The more I read and thought about the letters and the fact that her voice is so strong, I felt it was the right choice to ask for the transcript,” Treves explains. “For me, it’s not just about the episode of her rape and the ordeal afterwards and the court proceedings. It’s about giving Gentileschi her voice from that very first room, and the rarity of being so in touch with the voice of an artist from 400 years ago, as we are in her letters too.
